This report presents an exhaustive economics of the production of fatty acid C12 also known as lauric acid, from coconut oil. The process involves separating the white meat of the coconut from the hardback, washing and drying the shell, followed by fine grinding and drying. The oil is extracted from the ground copra using the Soxhlet method in the presence of n-hexane. The thus obtained oil is heated to remove n-hexane and is further heated in a water bath with sodium hydroxide to give lauric acid and glycerin. The lauric acid is finally separated from glycerin.
