Linde Pens a Deal for Industrial Gas Supplies to Panipat Refinery, Indian Oil

Linde, a global industrial gas company, recently made public their new business agreements in India. The company's Indian affiliates will be supplying industrial gases to the Panipat refinery, owned by the Indian Oil Corporation, situated in the northern region of the country. This arrangement involves delivering hydrogen, nitrogen, and compressed dry air to support the Panipat refinery's ambition to expand its yearly production from 15 million metric tonnes to an impressive 25 million metric tonnes.
Industrial gases hold a pivotal position in refining oil. They are instrumental in several processes, from the extraction of sulphur for cleaner fuel creation to the conversion of crude oil into a variety of products. They also play a role in the cleaning of process machinery and control tools.
Moloy Banerjee, the President of ASEAN & South Asia at Linde, expressed immense optimism about this collaboration. He mentioned, "Our advanced technology's exceptional efficiency, along with Linde's longstanding reputation for delivering secure and trustworthy solutions, played a pivotal role in securing this project." He also shared Linde's excitement about fortifying their existing relationship with Indian Oil and expanding their footprint in Northern India.

With its commencement set for 2025, this Panipat project stands as the second major hydrogen plant that Linde will design, own, and manage for Indian Oil. With an impressive industrial gas production capacity of 142,200Nm3 per hour, this plant is set to be one of Linde's most significant installations in India.
But Linde's commitment isn't limited to the Panipat refinery. The freshly constructed on-site facilities will also cater to the nitrogen needs of various companies from different sectors like chemicals, energy, and manufacturing.
Back in 2020, Dharmendra Pradhan, the Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas, had announced India's intent to escalate its oil refining capacity to a whopping 450-500 million tonnes annually by 2030. As of now, India refines approximately 250 million tonnes of oil annually. The government's projections suggest this number will surge to 472 million tonnes by 2040.
According to the article by Procurement Resource, Linde's Indian affiliates have inked a deal to supply industrial gases to the Indian Oil Corporation's Panipat refinery. The goal is to bolster the refinery's yearly production from 15 million to 25 million metric tonnes. Industrial gases, crucial in refining, aid in cleaner fuel production, crude oil conversion, and machinery maintenance.
Moloy Banerjee of Linde voiced optimism regarding the collaboration, emphasizing Linde's efficient technology and reliability. Slated to start in 2025, this becomes Linde's second significant hydrogen plant venture with Indian Oil. Beyond the refinery, Linde's new on-site facilities will serve other sectors. India aims to increase its oil refining capacity significantly by 2030, with current government estimates showing a surge in refining volumes by 2040.
