Orsted Makes Strides On The Revolutionary E-Methanol Initiative In Sweden

Orsted To Revolutionise E-Methanol

Ørsted Progresses On Its E-Methanol Journey

Ørsted A/S (CPH: ORSTED), a Danish clean energy group, commenced FlagshipONE, which has been labelled the most groundbreaking e-methanol project in Europe. The project is based in the northern Sweden region.

The operations for the project will presumably begin in 2025, offering the shipping industry a production capacity of 50,000 tonnes of e-methanol annually.

FlagshipONE will be situated near Horneborgsverket, the combined heat and power plant of Ovik Energi’s in Ornskoldsvik.

The respective suppliers for the successful functioning of the project have been selected; these include Siemens Energy for the electrolysers and control system, Carbon Clean for the carbon capture equipment, and Topsoe providing the methanol synthesis equipment.

The project was first designed by Liquid Wind, a Swedish e-fuels company which was later acquired by Ørsted.

FlagshipONE will bring great opportunities for green shipping and for the company Ørsted, which is also looking into the establishment of green fuel projects in Denmark and the US.

With these developments led by the company, it could lead Sweden to become a top market player for producing e-methanol, taking into account its prospects in the onshore and offshore wind energy and forest industry that withholds the capacity to provide biogenic carbon for e-methanol production.

eMethanol or green methanol is made by blending biogenic CO2 (CO2 produced when biologically based materials like biomass are burned) with hydrogen, formed via water electrolysis.

According to the Procurement Resource article, Ørsted, a Danish clean energy group, has launched the establishment of FlagshipONE, a European project designed to revolutionise e-methanol production.

The project will aim to create more opportunities in green shipping and its expansion across other countries. The company strives to set up 500 facilities worldwide by 2050, along with the help of some great global market leaders.
