In the paint, coating, and adhesive industries, 5-Nonanone is an essential solvent that helps dissolve different types of resins and polymers. Furthermore, 5-Nonanone is used as a flavoring agent in the food business, giving a variety of items a fruity scent. In addition, it serves as a bridge in the production of specialized chemicals, agrochemicals, and pharmaceuticals, which increases its demand and industrial utility.

The paint and coatings industries registered record profits in the third quarter, but the rate of growth was only mild in the last quarter of 2023. However, the diversified utility of 5-nonane brought stability to the market and helped the 5-Nonanone prices to remain stagnant amid the oscillations in the procurement rates of consumers. Also, the agrochemical sector faced the negative implications of the delayed sowing season in several agriculture-dependent countries, which was also evident in the movement of 5-Nonanone price trends during Q3 and Q4 of 2023.

About 5-Nonanone

5-Nonanone is a flammable, colourless liquid which belongs to the class of symmetrical ketones. It is a prominent eye irritant, and long exposures can cause some respiratory issues in humans. Metabolic pathway studies showed that 5-Nonanone could be converted in vivo to 2,5-hexanedione, an active neurotoxic metabolite.

5-Nonanone Production Processes

  • Production of 5-Nonanone from Levulinic Acid (LA) via Catalytic Processing

The aqueous solution of levulinic acid is catalytically processed and leads to the formation of the γ-valerolactone (GVL) intermediate. A product mixture containing pentanoic acid,5-nonanone and water is obtained on further processing. An organic liquid stream separates the water from the solvent layer; thus, the desired product is obtained.

Frequently Asked Questions

The 5-Nonanone outlook for 2026 points to prices remaining range-bound to modestly firm, with direction hinging on corn feedstock movements and the pace of recovery in solvent and agrochemical demand. Firmer corn prices through Q1 2026, driven by tighter Chinese old-crop inventories and cautious farmer selling, lent modest cost support. Steady paints and coatings consumption and seasonally sensitive agrochemical offtake kept buyers cautious. Sharper corn cost increases or sustained demand recovery could push prices firmer, while ample corn availability and cautious procurement would reinforce the range-bound tone.
5-Nonanone prices are driven primarily by valeric (pentanoic) acid feedstock costs, since ketonization of valeric acid over a metal oxide catalyst is the dominant production route and valeric acid typically represents 65 to 80% of raw material cost. Because valeric acid is itself often derived from levulinic acid sourced from corn processing, corn feedstock costs and crop-year supply conditions feed through to production economics. Downstream demand from solvent, plasticizer, fragrance, flavor, agrochemical, and paints and coatings applications sets the pace of offtake, with paint and coatings consumption typically providing the steadiest baseline pull.
Key producers and suppliers in the 5-nonanone market include Eastman Chemical Company, Shell, Dow Chemical Company, and Mitsui Chemicals, reflecting the product's ties to broader ketone and specialty solvent production. These companies and their customers operate across Asia Pacific, Europe, North America, Latin America, and Africa, tracking demand from solvent, plasticizer, and agrochemical intermediate applications in each region.
5-Nonanone is produced primarily through ketonization of valeric acid (pentanoic acid), which accounts for approximately 65 to 80% of total raw material costs. Vaporized valeric acid is passed over a metal oxide catalyst, zirconia, ceria, or manganese oxide, at about 350 to 450°C, where two acid molecules combine to form one 5-nonanone molecule. About 1.5 to 1.9 MT of valeric acid is consumed per MT of 5-nonanone.
5-Nonanone demand is driven by the chemical industry as a solvent and intermediate for plasticizers, fragrances, and flavors; the food and beverage sector for flavoring and aroma; the agrochemical industry as an intermediate in pesticides and herbicides; the pharmaceutical industry as an excipient and solvent; and the paints, coatings, and adhesives sector. Paint and coatings consumption tends to provide the steadiest baseline demand, while agrochemical offtake tracks seasonal sowing cycles, making it the more variable swing factor in overall demand.
Procurement Resource assesses 5-Nonanone prices through a structured, data-driven methodology that combines primary engagement with producers, suppliers and traders, secondary market data, continuous monitoring of feedstock and input costs, trade-flow and inventory tracking, and exchange or spot benchmarks. These inputs are validated and translated into a transparent price assessment and outlook. The detailed methodology is available on the Procurement Resource website.
