Asia

In the third quarter of 2025, acrolein price curve witnessed mixed performance across the Asian region, influenced by upstream propylene dynamics. The period commenced with a softening trend as lower raw material costs reduced production support, while expanded capacity from newly commissioned facilities kept competitive pressures elevated.

Supply conditions remained adequate as manufacturing facilities adjusted output rates, though demand from downstream sectors operated cautiously. Consumption from acrylic acid producers, the primary application for acrolein, maintained measured procurement patterns as derivative demand remained subdued. The mid-quarter phase experienced fluctuations as increased output loosened supply conditions, though temporary rebounds emerged linked to maintenance-related shutdowns.

The latter portion brought gradual recovery as feedstock costs firmed, and downstream interest improved modestly. The quarter concluded with values above mid-period lows, supported by firmer sentiment though tempered by balanced fundamentals across acrylic acid, methionine, and specialty chemical applications.

Europe

European acrolein markets remained broadly stable throughout the third quarter, mirroring the balanced propylene feedstock environment. Supply conditions proved adequate, supported by consistent production operations and balanced inventory levels. Demand from major downstream sectors demonstrated steady patterns. Acrylic acid producers maintained regular procurement volumes, while methionine manufacturers for animal nutrition applications showed measured activity.

Glutaraldehyde production for pharmaceutical and industrial disinfection sustained baseline consumption, alongside water treatment chemical applications. Contract settlements reflected equilibrium between production costs and consumption rates. The absence of notable supply disruptions or significant demand surges kept overall trading calm and predictable throughout the period.

North America

North American acrolein markets mirrored global trends during the third quarter, with prices experiencing mixed trajectory. Early weakness stemmed from sufficient inventories and cautious downstream orders as propylene costs remained comfortable. As feedstock costs edged upward and maintenance activities curbed availability, market sentiment improved, encouraging moderate restocking.

Demand from acrylic acid producers strengthened slightly during the latter portion, while methionine manufacturers for feed additive applications maintained steady consumption. Glutaraldehyde production for disinfectant markets and water treatment chemical applications provided additional support. The quarter closed with prices above earlier lows, reflecting balanced supply-demand dynamics and steady derivative activity.

About Acrolein

Acrolein, a colourless liquid, is the simplest form of unsaturated aldehyde. It has a pungent acrid smell. Acrolein is usually prepared from propylene at a commercial scale. Several useful compounds are produced from acrolein including amino acid methionine and it is also utilised as a biocide in industries.

Acrolein Production Processes

  • Production of Acrolein via Oxidation of Propene; from Acrolein; via Decomposition of Glycerol; and via Condensation of Formaldehyde and Acetaldehyde

In this process, production of  Acrolein from propene takes place with the help of oxidation. Propene is oxidised in the presence of air and the reaction requires metal oxides as the heterogeneous catalysts, which produces Acrolein as the final result.
