Asia

Acrolein or Propenal is an important petrochemical derived from ethylene and is commonly used in chemical and pesticide industries. Hence, their prices are also dependent on the consumption and demand patterns of these downstream industries. In the Chinese market, the industrial offtakes were very lukewarm, providing marginal support to the price trend.

The rise in crude oil prices, however, pushed the prices up frequently. Similarly, in the Indian market, the feedstock costs kept the market floating despite a very dull demand dynamic. However, the following quarter was equally concerning as both the upstream and downstream outlooks were largely regressive during this time. Despite a fall in the import of cheap Russian crude oil, the acrolein prices in both India and China depreciated during the last quarter as well.

Europe

The European price trend for acrolein followed a very zig-zag trajectory as the prices were observed to oscillate continuously during the said period. The market began on a weaker note but slightly picked up with the rise in feedstock costs. However, this incline was very temporary and short lived as the prices started plummeting again by the time the fourth quarter arrived. The downstream demands were steady and humble, while the feedstock costs plunged considerably.

North America

The North American price trend for acrolein was even more weak compared to the global outlook. The prices here wavered at the lower end for the majority of the given period. Initially, the dull demands because of a poor economic situation in the region kept the prices at bay despite a rise in its feedstock costs. And later on, even the production costs declined along with already stumbling demands. Overall, weak market performance was witnessed in H2’23.

Asia

The price trend of acrolein was majorly affected by the market activities of the feedstock market, i.e., propylene. In the first quarter, the prices of propylene showcased a mixed trajectory that resulted in the oscillations in the price trend of acrolein.

The cost of feedstock rose initially due to the rise in the momentum of production rates after a long tail of COVID restrictions and the holiday season in China. But soon, the prices began to fall with the declining cost of crude oil and the sudden shutdown of many manufacturing plants. The downstream industries performed poorly, along with the continuously falling cost of crude oil and energy production. Thus, as a result of weak demand and economic slowdown in the Asia-Pacific region, the price trend of acrolein moved southwards.

Europe

The European market conditions in the initial phase of the first quarter supported the rise in the prices of acrolein as it was supported by the increase in the cost of feedstock materials. After an initial incline, the prices began to fall. There were many factors that pitched in declining the cost of feedstock propylene and, in turn, the price trend of acrolein. The influx of cheap imports from overseas competitors, fewer orders from the downstream industries, and sliding economic conditions of the region resulted in the decline in the price trend of acrolein in Europe in both the first and second quarters of 2023.

North America

The decreasing cost of crude oil and overall energy production, along with the falling trajectory of prices of feedstock materials, hampered the growth of the acrolein market. To deal with the steeply declining economic conditions in North America, the financial sector raised the interest and inflation rates, which further negatively impacted the price trend of acrolein. In addition to this, the demand from the downstream industries also remained low as the consumers had only a little confidence in the market conditions that, eventually caused the price trend of acrolein to decline.

Asia Pacific

The prices of the commodity fell over the third quarter as the Asian market continued to witness a decline in crude oil prices. Due to the market being badly hit by low demand from the downstream sectors and uncertainties in the energy market, some of the manufacturers were forced to shut down their units. The first few months of the fourth quarter followed the same trajectory, however, some relief was seen in the price trend for acrolein in December.

Europe

The European market reflected the trend seen in the Asia-Pacific region. The ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine contributed to the decline in domestic demand and a rise in the cost of producing electricity. In the third and fourth quarters, prices fell due to a decline in feedstock prices, which was accompanied by average production rates.

North America

The subdued availability of labour in the North American market and the global crude oil crises affected the market severely. The prices of feedstock also witnessed a gradual decline in the fourth quarter as a result of lower upstream crude oil costs and lax demand from end-user industries, which contributed to the decline in the prices.
