In the UK, the average monthly prices went from around 175 USD/MT (8% Al2O3, CFR) in July’23 to about 227 USD/MT in December’23. Though the metal industry was struggling a little at the time, the aluminium sulfate market grew. Mainly because the market slump in the early months had emptied out the inventories, and the downstream demands maintained their momentum. Overall, positive market sentiments were witnessed in H2’23.

Analyst Insight

According to Procurement Resource, the Aluminium Sulfate price trends are expected to rise even further in the coming months as the demand trajectory looks very supportive of the current market trends.

Aluminium Sulfate Price Trend for the First Half of 2023

Aluminium sulfate prices were observed to be wavering at the lower side of the curve for the majority of the first half of the year 2023. The Chinese market was still trying to recover from the dire economic consequences of the Covid 19 pandemic, while the excess inventory stocks were concerning other major markets as well.

Though some occasional and temporary reverse fluctuations were witnessed at the time of the quarter shift, the prices were mostly teetering downwards. In the United Kingdom, the average monthly prices showed a 10% decline as the prices went from about 201 USD/MT (8% Al2O3, CFR) in January ‘23 to around 180 USD/MT in June’23. Overall, dull market trends were witnessed in H1’23.

Analyst Insight

According to Procurement Resource, the Aluminium Sulfate price trends will strive for improvement; thus, some inclination in prices is expected after a short-term continuation of the current trends.

Aluminium Sulphate Price Trend for the Second Half of 2022

Aluminium Sulphate price trend are directly dependent on that of its feedstocks cryolite and bauxite. Cryolite showed an upward trend in H2 2022. China is the biggest exporter of Aluminium Sulphate in the world. But the curtailed production capacities in H1 2022 due to Covid 19 lockdown policies strangled the market a lot. Quotations remained high from manufacturers, even though the low market didn’t support the high quotes.

In the middle of H2 due to freight interruptions and very high inflation upstream costs for the European market flung. But a global cutdown in industrial activity kept the demand in check.

So H2 2022 had a very mixed market sentiment for Aluminium Sulphate, where upstream costs pushed the prices up, but the slow market demands brought the prices back. American market too behaved in a similar manner. But as the Chinese industries resumed operations, the projections look somewhat promising.

Analyst Insight

According to Procurement Resource, the price trend for aluminium sulphate are expected to improve as the demand is expected to rebound, especially in the Asian market.

Aluminium Sulfate Price Trend For the First Half of 2022

Aluminium Sulfate is industrially manufactured via cryolite or bauxite. The price of feedstock cryolite remained stable throughout the year's first quarter. After the Lunar New Year break, the operating rates of the factories were not high, inventories were not under pressure, and the demand was stable; hence the feedstock cryolite prices averaged 7250 RMB/MT.

With the invasion of Ukraine by Russia in the last week of February, a substantial economic and political backlash was unleashed globally. The prices of all commodities rose due to trade bottlenecks and supply-side constraints.

The cryolite prices averaged around 7000-7600 RMB/MT in Shandong, China. Despite the rising operating costs, cryolite prices remained anchored in the market. Towards the end of June, the prices stabilized at around 7600 RMB/MT, and these higher quotations were justified due to the increased production costs, tight inventories, and tight supply lines. The inflated prices of feedstock cryolite affected the price trend for aluminium sulphate towards the higher end of the scale.

During the first half of the said year, the prices of feedstock bauxite averaged 67.62 Euro/DT Indonesian 49% min CIF China and 67.11 Euro/DT Guinean 45% min CIF China. However, the prices of mineral ores are expected to decrease in the coming months due to the demand destruction in the Chinese market and the baulking of buyers amid the speculations of a global recession. This will influence the prices of aluminium sulfate in the worldwide market.

Production Processes

  • Production of Aluminium Sulfate from Cryolite; from clays or Bauxite; from Alum Schists

Alum schists (a type of metamorphic rock) are a mixture of iron pyrite, aluminium silicate, and various bituminous substances. These are roasted, and during the process, the sulfuric acid obtained reacts with clay to form a product mixture containing aluminium sulfate. The mixture is subjected to further treatment to remove the impurities. The mixture is mixed with water and allowed to stand for water-soluble impurities to separate. Additionally, it is subjected to evaporation so that iron sulfate crystals separate, leaving the desired aluminium sulfate.
