  • Aluminium sulfate prices moved upward in Q1 2026, with the strongest increase seen in the USA, followed by India and the United Kingdom.
  • Feedstock pressure came from sulfuric acid and aluminium-based inputs, while freight and energy risks increased after disruption around the Strait of Hormuz.
  • Downstream demand from water treatment, wastewater treatment, paper, textiles, and industrial clarification remained steady, supporting need-based procurement.

Aluminium sulfate prices followed a firm trend in Q1 2026 as feedstock and logistics pressure outweighed moderate downstream demand. In Asia, India recorded a 5.24% increase from Q4 2025 to Q1 2026, while prices rose 6.99% from January to March 2026. The increase was supported by higher sulfuric acid-related cost pressure, steady demand from water treatment and paper applications, and freight uncertainty linked to the Iran war. In Europe, the United Kingdom showed a more moderate rise, with aluminium sulfate prices increasing 4.02% from Q4 2025 to Q1 2026 and 5.33% from January to March 2026. Demand from municipal water treatment and industrial effluent treatment stayed stable, while energy and logistics costs kept producers cautious. In North America, the USA posted the strongest increase, with prices rising 15.53% from Q4 2025 to Q1 2026 and 12.60% from January to March 2026. The sharper movement reflected stronger cost pass-through, steady water-treatment demand, and broader chemical logistics pressure.

About Aluminium Sulfate

Aluminium Sulfate is a water-soluble white crystalline solid, and it is primarily used as a coagulating agent in the purification of drinking water and sewage treatment plants. Its anhydrous form occurs naturally as a millosevichite mineral found near volcanic sites. Aluminium Sulfate usually occurs in its hydrate form, mainly as hexadecahydrates or octadecahydrates. Aluminium Sulfate is often referred to as alum which has been used as a flocculating agent since immemorial. The alum is a hydrated aluminium sulfate salt with a monovalent cation often substituted by potassium or ammonium.

Aluminium Sulfate Production Processes

  • Production of Aluminium Sulfate from Cryolite; from clays or Bauxite; from Alum Schists

Alum schists (a type of metamorphic rock) are a mixture of iron pyrite, aluminium silicate, and various bituminous substances. These are roasted, and during the process, the sulfuric acid obtained reacts with clay to form a product mixture containing aluminium sulfate. The mixture is subjected to further treatment to remove the impurities. The mixture is mixed with water and allowed to stand for water-soluble impurities to separate. Additionally, it is subjected to evaporation so that iron sulfate crystals separate, leaving the desired aluminium sulfate.
