Asia

In 2025, the Asian aluminium hydroxide market followed a moderately firm but largely range-bound trajectory, influenced primarily by fluctuations in aluminium sulfate feedstock costs and stable downstream demand. During the first half of the year, prices in India moved upward as seasonal demand from water treatment and flame-retardant applications remained supportive, while tightening supply chains, plant shutdowns, and reduced feedstock availability placed additional upward pressure on prices. In the second quarter, this firm trend continued as aluminium sulfate values rose steadily, prompting suppliers to revise offers upward while supply chains remained largely stable. During the third quarter, however, the market moved within a narrower range, with early softness caused by inventory buildup and subdued sentiment in Chinese and Indian markets. Toward the end of the period, prices recovered modestly as procurement improved from flame-retardant additives, pharmaceutical, and ceramics sectors.

Europe

In Europe, aluminium hydroxide prices in 2025 displayed a gradual firming trend in the first half, followed by softer but stable conditions later in the year. Early-year price increases were driven by tighter aluminium sulfate supply and steady demand from downstream sectors, although buying activity became more cautious as the quarter progressed. In the second quarter, the market reflected mixed movements as feedstock pricing stabilized, and buyers negotiated more carefully amid comfortable inventories. During the third quarter, prices softened slightly before stabilizing, supported by moderate demand from water purification, paper manufacturing, polymer fillers, and catalyst applications.

North America

North American aluminium hydroxide prices followed a generally upward path through much of 2025. Rising aluminium sulfate costs supported steady gains in the first half, while demand from water treatment, paper, flame retardants, ceramics, and glass sectors remained firm. In the third quarter, the market maintained steady-to-firm conditions as sufficient feedstock supply and stable procurement from downstream industries balanced slightly higher operating costs and occasional maintenance-related tightness.

Aluminum Hydroxide Production Processes

  • Production of Aluminum Hydroxide via Bayer Process

Commercially available aluminum hydroxide is produced using the Bayer process, which involves dissolving bauxite in sodium hydroxide at temperatures of up to 270 °C (518 °F). The waste solid, bauxite tailings, is removed, and aluminum hydroxide is precipitated from the sodium aluminate solution that remains.
