Asia

The Asian ATMP (Amino Trimethylene Phosphonic Acid) market witnessed very mixed price patterns in the first half of 2023. Prices depended on the feedstock phosphorous acid and ammonium chloride prices and the demands from downstream construction, coating, and dyeing sectors. ATMP prices were stable for most of the first quarter, but a falling pattern was visible in the second quarter as the market became saturated and demands dipped. Overall, an oscillating price trend for ATMP (Amino Trimethylene Phosphonic Acid) was observed in the Asian market.

Europe

The European ATMP (Amino Trimethylene Phosphonic Acid) market showed low swinging patterns in the said period. The struggling European economies had a hard time with downstream construction and other sectors, which, coupled with falling feedstock prices, contributed to the declining price trend. Further, the improved freight conditions and restored supply chains amidst low demands aided the downward trajectory for ATMP prices.

North America

The North American ATMP (Amino Trimethylene Phosphonic Acid) prices mimicked the trend seen in the European market and remained fluctuating throughout the period of discussion. After the restoration of trade routes and industrial revival in China, cheaper Asian imports were accessible. Further, the falling prices of phosphorous contributed to a lower wavering price pattern.

About ATMP

ATMP or Amino Trimethylene Phosphonic Acid is basically known as a phosphonic acid. It is synthesised with the Mannich-type reaction of ammonia, formaldehyde, and phosphorous acid, in a manner quite alike to the Kabachnik–Fields reaction. It has excellent chelation, low threshold inhibition and lattice distortion ability. In water system, it can prevent scale formation, particularly for calcium carbonate and is thus, widely used in in recirculated cooling water systems for power station, oil field, central air-conditioning, etc.

ATMP Production Process

  • Production of ATMP via Phosphorus Acid

To produce ATMP via Phosphorus Acid, Mannich type reaction synthesis route is utilised. In this process, phosphorus acid reacts with ammonium chloride at appropriate temperature while formaldehyde is mixed to the reaction vessel. Finally, ATMP is produced by separating HCL and unreacted ammonium.

Frequently Asked Questions

The ATMP outlook for 2026 is cautiously constructive, with prices likely supported through the year. Q2 2026 saw sharp gains, with China FOB rising approximately 13.5% from May to June and Brazil CIF up roughly 15.9% over the same period, reflecting firming fertilizer and agricultural sector demand consistent with historical seasonal patterns. Feedstock cost pressures and active Chinese export pricing are key near-term supports, though downside risk exists if agricultural planting cycles slow or fertilizer demand softens in the second half of the year.
ATMP prices are driven primarily by phosphorous-based feedstock costs, since the product is manufactured via a Mannich-type reaction using phosphorous acid, ammonium chloride, and formaldehyde, with phosphorous acid ultimately sourced from phosphate rock. Fertilizer and agricultural sector demand cycles are the dominant downstream drivers, because phosphonate scale inhibitors track fertilizer production and application seasons closely. Regional freight and import costs shape landed price differences between markets, and plant operating rates and maintenance schedules at major Chinese and Indian producers determine near-term supply availability.
ATMP production is concentrated among manufacturers including Acuro Organics Limited, Innova Corporate, Shandong IRO Chelating Chemical Co., Ltd, Shandong Taihe Water Treatment Technologies Co., Ltd., and Henan Qingshuiyuan Technology Co., Ltd., with trading and supply spanning AVA Chemicals Private Limited, Zschimmer & Schwarz, Zaozhuang Dongtao Chemical Technology Co., Zaozhuang Kerui Chemicals Co., and Zeel Product.
ATMP is produced via a Mannich-type reaction using phosphorous acid and ammonium chloride as primary feedstocks, with formaldehyde added in a controlled-temperature reactor. Upstream, phosphorous acid derives from elemental phosphorus sourced from phosphate rock, while ammonium chloride comes from ammonia (itself derived from natural gas) and hydrochloric acid. The finished ATMP, a pale-yellow liquid, then serves as a scale and corrosion inhibitor in industrial water treatment, cooling systems, oilfields, petrochemicals, power plants, metal treatment, textiles, and detergents.
ATMP demand is driven primarily by the water and waste-water treatment industry, where it is used as a scale and corrosion inhibitor in recirculated cooling water systems, with strong activity in this sector directly tightening supply and supporting higher prices. The textile industry is another key consumer, using ATMP as a chelating and sequestering agent in dyeing operations. The detergent and metal treatment industries also contribute meaningfully, leveraging ATMP's scale-inhibiting and corrosion-inhibiting properties. Additionally, oilfields, petrochemicals, power plants, and refineries drive demand across the petroleum, energy, and oil & gas sectors.
Procurement Resource assesses ATMP prices through a structured, data-driven methodology that combines primary engagement with producers, suppliers and traders, secondary market data, continuous monitoring of feedstock and input costs, trade-flow and inventory tracking, and exchange or spot benchmarks. These inputs are validated and translated into a transparent price assessment and outlook. The detailed methodology is available on the Procurement Resource website.
