Betaine Price Trend 2025

In 2025, the betaine market followed a transition from early-year firmness to softer conditions in the latter half, largely driven by fluctuations in sugar beet-derived feedstock availability. During the first quarter, prices experienced a slight upward trend due to constrained molasses supply and tighter feedstock conditions across Europe, which increased production costs. In the second quarter, the market remained relatively stable despite disruptions in sugar beet planting cycles and concerns over delayed harvests, as supply chains adjusted and steady demand from animal feed, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals supported consumption.

In the second half of the year, betaine prices moved downward as sugar beet availability improved significantly. The third quarter saw a decline in prices due to lower feedstock costs and comfortable supply levels, while demand remained steady but cautious, with buyers favoring need-based procurement. This softening trend continued into the fourth quarter, supported by strong European harvests that further reduced feedstock costs and limited price support. Downstream demand from personal care, feed, and food sectors remained stable but insufficient to drive price recovery.

During 2024, Betaine prices in Europe closely followed trends in the upstream market, primarily driven by supply and demand dynamics for sugar beet molasses. The year began on relatively stable ground, with low feedstock prices due to an oversupply from previous seasons and reduced demand in some industries. This upstream stability kept Betaine prices steady during the early months.

However, by midyear, conditions shifted. Reduced feedstock supplies mainly caused by lower cultivation areas and unpredictable weather in key growing regions such as Germany led to tighter availability. This shortage contributed to increased feedstock prices, which in turn raised the production costs for Betaine.

As feedstock prices rose in the second half of the year, Betaine prices followed an upward trend. The combination of constrained feedstock supply and growing demand from various industries exerted upward pressure on Betaine pricing. By year-end, the Betaine market adjusted to the reduced feedstock supply, with prices fluctuating to reflect the increased volatility in the upstream market.

Betaine is known as a modified amino acid composed of glycine with three methyl groups that acts as a methyl donor in several metabolic pathways. This amino acid derivative n be found in plants as well as in several marine invertebrates. An organic osmolyte, it serves as a crucial cofactor in methylation.
