About Bleaching Earth

Bleaching Earth is termed swelling clay because it expands significantly when exposed to water. The capacity of the absorbent is two to seven times its volume. Prior to washing, drying, and milling to obtain the appropriate particle size distribution, these clays are treated with mineral acid to increase their surface area and pore volume.

Bleaching Earth Production Processes

  • Production of Bleaching Earth from Clay

It is made by processing montmorillonite clay with mineral acids and eluting basic elements such as aluminium, iron, and magnesium.

Frequently Asked Questions

The bleaching earth outlook remains tied primarily to bentonite, attapulgite, and sepiolite clay feedstock costs, since these directly set the cost floor for activated product. Edible oil refining demand across Asia Pacific, particularly Malaysia, Indonesia, China, and India, is the dominant demand driver, with rising vegetable oil and animal fat consumption sustaining refining requirements. Energy costs for acid activation and thermal processing add a further cost layer for activated grades. A meaningful softening would require expanded clay supply, lower energy costs, or reduced edible oil refining activity; tighter clay supply or firmer energy costs would push the market higher.
Bleaching earth prices are driven primarily by bentonite, attapulgite, and sepiolite clay feedstock costs, the core raw materials for the activated product. Edible oil demand across Asia Pacific, especially in Malaysia, Indonesia, China, and India, is the dominant demand-side driver, since bleaching earth is essential to oil refining. A structural shift toward activated bleaching earth for high-chlorophyll oils adds further cost pressure relative to natural grades. Energy costs for acid activation and thermal processing, particularly for chemically treated variants, are a further lever, though efficiency gains in production technology can help offset rising feedstock and energy costs.
Key companies in the bleaching earth market include Ashapura Perfoclay Limited and Global Bleach Chem Private Limited from India, Oil-Dri Corporation of America from the United States, and Taiko Group of Companies. On the demand side, Asia Pacific, particularly China, India, Indonesia, and Malaysia, is the dominant consuming and importing region, driven by edible oil refining. Europe and North America represent significant but smaller markets for mineral oil and lubricant applications. The supply base is concentrated among a small number of established manufacturers, which is a meaningful consideration for supply security.
The bleaching earth value chain begins with calcium bentonite and attapulgite clay as primary feedstocks, blended together and crushed before treatment with sulfuric acid to activate the clay by expanding its pore volume and surface area. The activated material is then washed, dried, and milled to the required particle size. The finished product serves edible oil refiners, biodiesel producers, mineral oil processors, and paraffin wax manufacturers, with demand underpinned by edible oil consumption and biofuel production growth.
The edible oil and biofuel industries are the primary demand drivers for bleaching earth. Rising consumption of vegetable oils and animal fats across Asia Pacific, particularly in Malaysia, Indonesia, China and India, directly increases refining requirements and sustains price pressure. The biofuel sector's need for oil purification further amplifies demand. Growing preference for activated bleaching earth over natural grades-especially for high-chlorophyll oils-adds to price escalation, compounded by rising costs of bentonite, attapulgite and sepiolite feedstocks.
Procurement Resource assesses bleaching earth prices through a structured, data-driven methodology that combines primary engagement with producers, suppliers and traders, secondary market data, monitoring of feedstock and input costs, trade-flow and inventory tracking, and exchange or spot benchmarks. These inputs are validated and translated into a transparent price assessment and outlook. The detailed methodology is available on the Procurement Resource website.
