The global market for Carboxymethyl Cellulose experienced mixed trends throughout the year, influenced by soft downstream demand and shifting trade dynamics. The opening period witnessed slow price declines as major end-use sectors displayed subdued consumption patterns. Construction and textile applications, which utilize CMC for various processing and formulation needs, showed weak activity levels, reducing overall procurement volumes. Production curtailments and facility maintenance in certain Asian regions provided limited support as consumption remained constrained. Pharmaceutical and food applications maintained moderate but steady demand, offering baseline stability amid broader market softness. Mid-year developments brought supply-side disruptions and trade realignments that affected raw material availability. Tariff implementations on cellulose imports introduced market uncertainty, particularly affecting European and North American buyers. Resistance to supplier pricing emerged as buyers delayed orders and procurement activities, leading to increased inventory accumulations at distribution points. These conditions weighed on CMC production economics and market sentiment.
The latter portion saw mixed regional trends as tariff removals on certain cellulose categories eased supply constraints and stabilized market conditions. Export activity from major producing regions strengthened following policy adjustments, improving material flows. However, elevated global availability and subdued paper manufacturing margins in Asia continued limiting upward pricing momentum. Inventory positions fluctuated across regions as buyers adjusted procurement strategies.

Carboxymethyl Cellulose (CMC) prices experienced significant volatility throughout 2024, primarily influenced by fluctuations in cellulose markets. The year began with relatively stable prices in Asian markets that dipped slightly before stabilizing in March. Meanwhile, European CMC prices climbed due to reduced cellulose supply from Ukraine, where the ongoing conflict limited agricultural production.
In Q2, CMC demand briefly surged in March due to increased activity in the paper industry but weakened considerably by April. Downstream manufacturers faced profitability challenges, which limited their purchasing enthusiasm. Import volumes also declined as buyers resisted the higher prices.
The second half of 2024 saw CMC prices remain elevated as wood pulp costs increased significantly. Persistent supply chain disruptions, labour challenges, and growing demand from the packaging sector created upward pressure on raw material availability. Rising shipping costs and logistical difficulties in major pulp-producing regions further strained CMC producers financially.
Industries dependent on CMC products including textiles, pharmaceuticals, and food processing encountered consistently higher prices throughout this period, though increases varied by product grade and contract terms. Chinese manufacturers initially absorbed some cost increases but eventually passed these on to end-users as margins tightened.
Carboxymethyl cellulose, a derivative of cellulose, is a cheaper, nontoxic, biodegradable, and renewable polymer. CMC containing carboxymethyl groups is generated via the reaction of cellulose with chloroacetate in alkali to produce substitutions in the C2, C3, or C6 positions of glucose units. It functions as a modifier, retains water, and is an excellent film former. These attributes make it an ideal choice as a bio-based hydrocolloid. CMC is water soluble and more amenable to the hydrolytic activity of cellulases.

In the process of alkali-catalyzation, CMC is produced by the alkali-catalyzed reaction of cellulose with chloroacetic acid. During this step, a product mixture containing CMC and salts is obtained, and this mixture is further subjected to purification to get the desired product. CMC's functional properties depend on the cellulose structure's degree of substitution.
