When halogenated using chlorine gas, paraffin oil gives chlorinated paraffin a transparent liquid with a sweet odour. It is insoluble in water but dissolves in chlorinated solvents. It is used in lubricating oils, cutting oils, as a flame retardant and as secondary plasticizers.

Chlorinated paraffin is obtained by halogenating the paraffin. The paraffin wax is melted, and chlorine gas is introduced into the molten wax at elevated temperatures. The obtained chlorinated product is further mixed with additives, filtered and cooled, giving chlorinated paraffin.
