The US spearmint oil market experienced tightening supply conditions during the fourth quarter, with both native and Scotch spearmint varieties facing distinct dynamics. Production remained constrained due to limited disease-free ground for rotation and declining numbers of both producers and distillation facilities.
Input cost pressures from labour and financing continued affecting grower economics, though inflationary trends had moderated from peak levels. Scotch spearmint markets faced pronounced supply constraints as years of reduced planting resulted in minimal available open oil, particularly from Far West sources.
Total planted acres fell as growers responded to earlier demand weakness, though the fourth quarter brought renewed buying interest driven partly by concerns over potential tariffs on Canadian imports. Clean plant stock shortages limited production expansion capabilities despite improved demand conditions.
Contract negotiations reflected these supply-demand fundamentals, with scattered spot market opportunities emerging but limited volumes available. Varietal mint production continued expanding as growers sought yield advantages and disease tolerance, though the proprietary nature limited market visibility.
Analyst Insight
According to Procurement Resource, spearmint oil prices are expected to maintain firm conditions in the near term as supply remains constrained while demand shows continued strength.

During the third quarter of 2025, the spearmint oil price curve displayed a largely fluctuating trajectory within a narrow range. Supply disruptions and trade measures significantly influenced price direction throughout the quarter. In India, a key producer, spearmint oil markets were affected by the tariff measures imposed by the United States on Indian mentha and related oils. Exporters reported order cancellations and shipment delays, which created uncertainties across the supply chain.
Farmers in key producing regions such as Uttar Pradesh experienced financial stress as procurement slowed, limiting their ability to recover production costs. This contraction in trade activity placed downward pressure on export margins even as domestic availability increased. By the end of the quarter, prices showed signs of stabilization as output from peak harvest periods improved availability, offsetting some of the earlier supply-side tightness. Trading activity normalized slightly, though confidence among exporters and farmers remained subdued, given the prevailing tariff regime.
Spearmint Oil is obtained from the herb Mentha spicata L., a perennial plant that offers a fruity sweet scent and minty taste and aroma. R-(–)-carvone is the most abundant compound in spearmint oil and provides spearmint its distinctive smell. Spearmint oil promotes digestion and helps to teat occasional stomach upset and respiratory and nervous system problems. Spearmint Oil, also known as “The Gentler Mint Oil”, is very different from peppermint essential oil in its mildness, thus, making it a better option for use among children and those with sensitive skin.

The manufacturing process of Spearmint oil occurs via the steam distillation process. The process starts with harvesting the leaves from the spearmint plant. The leaves are placed in a still, followed by passing a high-pressure steam through them, which makes the molecules rise with the steam into a condenser. The oil is cooled and collected. After the oil is collected, it is separated from water molecules or other impurities that may have been collected during the distillation process. Finally, the oil is tested for purity and quality to produce Spearmint Oil.
Spearmint oil has a variety of industrial applications, especially in the fragrance, food, and personal care industries. In the fragrance industry, it is used in perfumes, air fresheners, and scented candles for its sweet, refreshing aroma. In the food and beverage industry, spearmint oil serves as a natural flavoring agent in products such as gum, candies, and teas. Its mild, cooling properties make it a popular ingredient in oral care products like toothpaste and mouthwash. Additionally, spearmint oil is incorporated into cosmetics and skincare products for its soothing, antimicrobial, and rejuvenating effects. Its versatility makes it a valuable ingredient in multiple sectors.
