Strawberries Price Trends Strawberries Price Trend for the First Half of 2023

Strawberries experienced great market fluctuations in the first two quarters of 2023. Heavy floods and unseasonal rainfalls inflicted a loss of around 1300 acres of Strawberries in the biggest Strawberries-producing US state of California. California accounts for around 90% of the country's Strawberry production.

With a loss of around 100 million USD, the farmers priced Strawberries higher to recover some losses. The situation around Strawberries started improving in the second quarter as the farming and harvesting activities resumed in a more normal manner. Overall, mixed market sentiments were observed.

Analyst Insight

According to Procurement Resource, the uncertainty around seasonal variations suggests a mixed market behavior by Strawberries going forward as well.

Strawberries Price Trend for the Second Half of 2022

Strawberries experienced fluctuating market behavior during the second half of the year 2022. Initially, in July, at the beginning of the third quarter, the prices depreciated substantially because of relatively higher harvests during the summer season. A rise of about 30% from the usual harvests was observed. This was a result of the high heat waves experienced in England during this summer when temperatures started topping 40 degrees.

However, with this speedy harvest, the market soon started seeing a supply shortage, which pushed Strawberry prices up, especially during the seasonal transitions. As the winter months arrived, delayed sowing further influenced the Strawberry market. The latter half of the last quarter saw some balancing; otherwise, the prices mostly swung high.

Analyst Insight

According to Procurement Resource, the price trend for Strawberries are expected to continue fluctuating going forward with seasonal variations and consumption patterns.

For the Second Quarter of 2022

Asia

Although the outbreak had an impact on strawberry prices during Q2 of 2022, overall sales did not suffer much. Early in the season, prices were high, ranging from 200-300 RMB/kg. In the days leading up to and following the Spring Festival, the price of a kilogramme stabilised at 90–120 RMB/kg (15–18 USD/kg).

Europe

There was abundant domestic supply of strawberries in nations including the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, and the United Kingdom because to the great weather in Northern Europe throughout the growing season. Even the harvest in the UK was 50% bigger than it was the previous year. However, the unfavourable weather conditions at the beginning of the growing season had an impact on the production quantities in the normally warmer European nations like Italy and Spain.

For the First Quarter of 2022

Asia

In China, strawberry prices dropped to 60 RMB/kg, with the lowest prices around 20-30 RMB/kg as the spring season approached and the supplies of strawberry increased in the market. The prices had dropped to levels lower than that of those before the spring festival, decreasing to almost half the prices. Low shipping costs caused strawberry prices to remain weak in the region during February 2022.

Europe

In January, strawberry prices in Spain declined by 58% on a year-on-year basis but increased by 31% on a month-on-month basis to 2.1 EUR/Kg. The price rise came after a cooler than usual weather in Spain which affected the crop by delaying the ripening. Top producing regions in Spain, like Huelva reported a 20% decline in the volume.

The demand was strong in February due to the incoming Valentine’s season which led to a upward trend in the price of strawberries in the region. In March, the price increased by 9% in France while in Germany, market prices ranged between 3.75 EUR/kg (Hamburg) and 4.9 EUR/kg (Frankfurt).

North America

US witnessed a strong consumer demand in the strawberry market with a consumption of over 2 billion pounds of strawberries by March 2022, with increased volumes of imports and incentivised high acreage in California.

For the Fourth Quarter of 2021

Asia

The purchase price for this year's first crop was hovering at 130 RMB/kg ($20.31); significantly less than the last year's price of 160 RMB/kg ($25.00). Meanwhile, retail rates for the inaugural batch of the commodity rose to as high as 180 RMB/kg ($28.12). Hongyan strawberries' second crop was projected to arrive in mid-November, bringing prices down.

The typical market price in Beijing's Xinfadi market was roughly 12 RMB, whereas Jiujiu strawberries were more costly, costing an average of 21 RMB during the January month of 2022. Prices for these three types decreased 30% to 40% in comparison to the last month. However, they were not inexpensive in comparison to prior years, particularly the Jiujiu strawberries from Dandong, Liaoning Province, which were roughly 30% more expensive this year.

Indian Strawberries were expected to cost between 2.6 and 2.15 USD/kg or between 1.18 and 0.98 USD/lb in 2022. The price per kilogram in Indian Rupees was INR 195.17.

Europe

In Hamburg, limited Spanish batches fetched significantly higher rates than plentiful and somewhat immature Egyptian fruit. After the Christmas season, demand in Eastern Germany decreased substantially, and supply from Egypt, Greece, the Netherlands, and Turkey was adjusted correspondingly. Prices per kilogram ranged between 3.50 and 16 EUR.

North America

Strawberry prices greatly recovered from the previous values during the third quarter and further reached a year high value of 6.75USD/Kg by the end of first week of December. Average prices for traditional strawberries in the U.S. market were 6.70 USD/kg, a 34% rise year-on-year.

The strawberry business in the United States has shown an increased trend in per capita consumption over the last two decades but is down 1% from the previous year. This is for a variety of reasons: consumers are more aware of the necessity of eating a balanced diet; yield advances have increased local supply; and imports enable year-round availability.

For First, Second and Third Quarters of 2021

Asia

In India, strawberry prices increased to 250 INR/kg. Due to the fruit's late cultivation, it arrived on the market late. Cloudy weather had an effect on the quality and size of the fruit. Production was substandard. The price was predicted to decrease the later month when other seasonal fruits such as grapes, apples, and melons became available.

According to the Maharashtra Strawberry Growers Association, growers grew barely 60% of their normal crop this year. 4,000 acres of farming land was previously used by farmers which was reduced to just 2,500 acres, because of the fear of market uncertainty, severe weather, and associated losses.

North America

The United States is the world's second largest strawberry grower, with output centered in California and Florida. While California generates 91% of the total, Florida produces the winter varieties. Fresh and frozen strawberry exports totaled 304K MT, which was 93%fresh. The primary importer of fresh strawberries in the United States is Canada, which imports 73% of its fresh strawberry supply.

The price during the month of august was 4.25USD/kg which fell continuously for the next four weeks reaching the minimum value at 2.5USD/kg by the end of fourth week (September). Strawberry prices were expected to recover from the previous low values during the last quarter of 2021.

For the Year 2020

Asia

In India, the selling price was 300 INR/kg in Pune and Mumbai, although the average price was between 150 and 200 INR/kg during the season, depending on the fruit's quality. The prolonged monsoon, which resulted in significant rainfall in September and early October, has had a detrimental effect on both fruit quality and productivity, according to Mahabaleshwar growers. As a result, strawberry prices increased by about 100% in comparison to the same period last year.

Europe

Germany is Europe's largest strawberry market. In the spring and summer, fresh strawberries are quite popular. Despite abundant domestic production and a preference for locally grown crop, imports of foreign and non-European strawberries continued to grow. Germany is Europe's third largest strawberry grower, behind Spain and Poland, with 152,000 tonnes in 2020.

Apart from domestic production, Germany is the world's largest strawberry importer, with a value of over 300 million euros in 2020. Spain accounts for more than 70% of imports. The Netherlands ranks second in terms of suppliers. Non-European imports remain restricted and fluctuated in response to local and regional supply availability. Germany imported €13.6 million ($13.6 million) worth of goods from outside Europe in 2020, primarily from Egypt and Morocco, totaling fewer than 4,000 tonnes.

Costs of air freight increased significantly since the COVID-19 border closures, and a scarcity of foreign labour in the fruit picking sector indicated that producers cannot harvest their fields quickly enough, resulting in many berries being too ripe for export. With fewer exports, more supply was available for local consumption, resulting in reduced costs by 43%. In November, strawberry prices were 3.45 USD per 250g punnet, down from 6.04 USD in October.

North America

In 2020, the United States employed 23,280 hundredweights, worth more than $2.2 billion. 4510 tonnes of fresh market strawberries were consumed. Fresh strawberry prices averaged 106 USD/hundredweight. Outside of North America, Mexico is the leading provider of this commodity to the United States, accounting for more than 10% of all strawberries imported in 2020.

The price was more in the year 2020 compared to 2019. When the F.O.B. pricing from Salinas was analyzed during the earlier 90 days, it was observed that the price was higher in 2020 since mid-September, reaching over 20 USD/box, compared to 12 USD in 2019 and just 9 USD in 2018.
