During the third quarter of 2025, synthetic menthol prices moved steadily higher. In July, the market saw moderate gains as production remained controlled and supply tightened in major manufacturing regions.

August brought further price increases as trade restrictions and export hurdles created delays, limiting product availability in international markets. By September, the pace of growth slowed slightly, but overall values remained firm, reflecting the continued balance between constrained supply and steady demand.

Producers faced a challenging environment despite rising prices. Export-oriented companies dealt with order cancellations and shipment delays, which led to stockpiles building up in some locations. Manufacturing costs remained elevated, squeezing margins for smaller producers. At the same time, domestic buyers maintained regular purchasing patterns, helping to support overall market stability. Global trade shifts and regulatory changes added complexity, affecting how producers and buyers managed inventory and shipments.

About Synthetic Menthol

Synthetic Menthol, unlike natural menthol, is synthetically produced using petrochemicals like m-cresol.  It appears as a waxy, crystalline substance, which is generally clear or white in colour. It is solid at room temperature. Synthetic menthol has anesthetic and counter-irritant qualities and is widely utilised to relieve minor throat irritation.

Synthetic Menthol Production Processes

  • Production of Synthetic Menthol via Hydrogenation Process; from Pulegone via Hydrogenation; and from Myrcene via Asymmetric Synthesis

The production of Synthetic Menthol via hydrogenation involves alkylation of m-cresol using propene to produce thymol, which undergoes hydrogenation to form a reaction mixture. Fractional distillation of the obtained mixture takes place to finally produce Synthetic Menthol.
