Under an Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) agreement, the consortium will work in tandem with the State Government. Their tasks include detailed project and engineering design, procurement of vital equipment, finalizing contracting arrangements, and cost estimations, aiming for operational commencement in 2026.
Nancy Southern, Chair & Chief Executive Officer of ATCO, expressed excitement about the partnership, acknowledging the South Australian Government's proactive approach towards this hydrogen opportunity. John Ivulich, CEO and Country Chair of ATCO Australia, highlighted the consortium's proficiency in hydrogen technologies and power plant operations.
The project involves a 250 MW hydrogen production facility and a 200 MW hydrogen-fuelled electricity generation facility, both key to South Australia’s hydrogen aspirations. The state government has allocated AUD $593 million ($376m) for these facilities, which it will own.
South Australia's Department for Energy and Mining is steering this initiative, aiming to foster deeper engagement with key hydrogen industry players and expand the industry through various schemes and projects. This includes the Hydrogen Jobs Plan and the Australian Gas Networks Hydrogen Park South Australia, a demonstration project featuring a 1.25 MW electrolyser in Adelaide.
Additionally, H2U, an Australian hydrogen infrastructure firm, is developing a facility integrating over 75 MW in water electrolyser to produce renewable hydrogen and ammonia on the Eyre Peninsula. Furthermore, global trading giant Trafigura is exploring the development of an AUD $750m ($500m) hydrogen project to integrate with the Nyrstar Port Pirie lead smelter in the state's north.
