  • The product employs renewable materials to preserve fossil resources as well as helps the stakeholders fulfil sustainability goals.

BASF has started producing its first bio-based polyol, Sovermol®, in Mangalore, India. The product will help serve the rapidly increasing demand for eco-friendly products that can be employed in windmills, New Energy Vehicles (NEV), flooring and protective industrial coatings in the Asia Pacific region.

Using the current BASF Mangalore site facilities, the Sovermol production facility has now started operations following an extensive planning and construction.

The Senior Vice President of Global Business Unit Resins and Additives, BASF, Dr Claus Dallner, stated that at BASF, they leverage their international expertise along with their ability to help the markets most constructively. The Asia Pacific region is amongst the fastest-expanding market in the world for NEV and coatings. The Sovermol production facility is deliberately situated in Mangalore, nearby the supply of raw materials. This will immensely lower the transportation time and contribute towards their goal to bring “best-in-class” products and services to their Asia Pacific consumers efficiently.

They constantly aim to enhance their technology as well as functions in order to gain success in business. The project displays their ability to continuously improve by remodelling their operations at the Mangalore site, as per Dr Alba Mena Subiranas, Vice President of Operations, Global Business Unit Resins and Additives, BASF.

Sovermol is sourced from sustainable materials and includes no volatile organic compounds (VOC). Its products are used in the production of sustainable coatings and adhesives for a wide range of industries, allowing consumers to lower their carbon footprint as well as preserve resources.

BASF's Mangalore site has been functional since 1996. Circulated over 200 hectares, it is the biggest production facility of BASF in South Asia and manufactures fine chemical catalysts, polymer dispersions, and coatings for paper, agriculture and automotive sectors.
