Russian crude oil import to India increased by 5 percent in July by private sector refiners

Crude Oil Import to India

India's imports of Russian oil were uplifted by the private-sector refiners. This hike was observed in the month of July, after the decline in June, which was reportedly due to narrowing discounts. As per the reports of the energy cargo tracker Vortexa, the imports of Russian crude oil in India are estimated at around 1.92 million barrels per day during the month of July. This data is as high as it was calculated in May with a minor decrease of 6000 bpd, while in comparison to June, it represents a hike of 5 percent.

In July, Reliance Industries and Nayara Energy leading private-sector refiners in India imported crude oil that sums 21.5 percent more than it was in June. Meanwhile, government-owned refiner lowered their import rates by 2.5 percent from June. Moreover, the total imports by the private sector accounted for 37 percent in the last month. Importation of Urals, the flagship grade of Russia, reached the highest in July by 1.6 million bpd, which was 18 percent higher than the previous month. However, the Indian oil ministry warned about the reduction in the imports of Russian oil by state-run refiners due to the narrowing discounts and payment troubles.

Serena Huang, Vortexa's analyst, reported that Russia's decision to decrease the discounts is a strategic move due to the limited alternative suppliers for Indian refiners during the cuts in production of medium-sour crude by OPEC. However, Russia is aware that India and China are crucial markets for their crude and will likely keep prices attractive but with narrower discounts compared to previous months.

On the other hand, the total exports of Russia's crude oil decreased by 650,000 bpd in July compared to its peak level during April and May. This decline was observed due to the reduction in crude production decided by Russia to meet the internal demand and increase their refinery operations. Furthermore, if Russian domestic refiners continue to increase their production, the crude exports from the country could further increase in August.

According to Procurement Resource, private-sector refiners increased Russian crude oil imports in India in the month of July by 5 percent. This rise is observed amid the reduction in discounts which lowered the imports in June.
