Svanehøj associates with Svanehøj France to better LNG Terminal Safety in India and France

LNG Terminal Safety in India and France

The Danish tech manufacturer, Svanehøj, is undertaking a significant revamp of the safety systems at the Konkan liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal in India and the Fos Cavaou LNG terminal in France. In collaboration with Svanehøj France, their French affiliate, the primary focus is on the enhancement of safety systems for three LNG storage tanks.

A milestone has already been achieved with the successful retrofitting of one tank at the Fos Cavaou terminal with a modern densitometer. Additionally, Svanehøj has an extensive agenda at the Konkan LNG terminal, where they are on a mission to replace several components as part of Konkan's initiative to refurbish one-third of their LNG tanks.

Shedding light on their initiative at Fos Cavaou, Simon Dufour, the Sales Manager at Svanehøj France, mentioned that their global outreach to various LNG terminals highlighted specific requirements. While some terminals merely required replacement parts, others were in dire need of advanced instrumentation. Dufour emphasized the criticality of the new instrumentation, noting that the absence of such could lead to potential hazards and potentially halt terminal operations.

At Konkan, the comprehensive timeline for the remaining upgrades is still under deliberation but is anticipated to span 2-3 years. As part of this extensive upgrade, Dufour unveiled plans to introduce three cutting-edge, servo-driven tank gauging systems, the LTs. These systems are projected to bolster both reliability and operational efficiency. Alongside, there are also plans to deploy an LTD tank gauging system and two data acquisition systems, instrumental in enhancing operation performance, data collection and analysis, and facilitating informed decision-making.

Such proactive investments in advanced tank gauging systems and their associated components indicate the commitment of both LNG terminals to uphold the highest safety standards in the industry and ensure their prolonged operational viability.

The Fos Cavaou LNG terminal, situated in Bouches-du-Rhone, France, is an asset of Fosmax LNG, a subsidiary of Engie. Having commenced operations in 2009, it achieved full operational capability by September 2010. With a standing capacity of eight mtpa, the terminal envisions extending its capacity by a further 4.04 mtpa by 2030.
