Singapore's first Methanol bunkering operation is conducted by Hong Lam marine

Methanol Bunkering Operation

Hong Lam Marine, a bunker barge in Singapore, shipped its first-ever bunkering operation, carrying methanol fuel through the waterways of Singapore. The barge was out to deliver around 300 mt of bio-methanol fuel as a marine fuel traveling all the way to Maersk. The new methanol-fuelled feeder vessel at Maersk, Singapore, received the bunker on Wednesday with the deliverables, mentioning its journey on the Maritime and Port Authority website.

Hong Lam used its registered tanker, known as the MT Agility, for this debut operation. The Maersk’s new vessel is on its way carrying the biofuel, from its respective shipyard towards Ulsan, for its naming ceremony, which has been scheduled in Copenhagen in September.

The Maritime and Port Authority (MPA), Singapore, is working on the Technical Reference, for the Methanol-fuel bunkering, in consultation with the Standard Development Organisation in Singapore Chemical Industry Council (SDO@SCIC). The TR is the unit that has been developed to keep track of the checklist prepared for the maintenance and advancement of the bunker. The TR is required to keep a check on the refuelling requirements of the bunker, crew training, and its competency. It will also look after the operational and safety requirements needed for delivering methanol fuel from the bunker to the vessels.

The first-ever bunkering operation shipping methanol has been a milestone achievement for the country. It’ll be an ideal source to observe and work on the requirement and new methodology that will help to design new and advanced bunker tanks in the future. The operation is the key to learning the best practices and introducing digital bunkering, mass flow meters, and specialized bunkers in the upcoming years.
