Trinseo Starts-Off with its PMMA Depolymerization Plant in Rho, Italy
Trinseo, a leader in specialty material solutions, is pioneering sustainable plastics advancement with its new polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) depolymerization plant in Rho, Italy. Set for commissioning in Q1 2024, this facility is a significant stride in the circular economy, transforming PMMA for reintegration into the plastics value chain. The plant will focus on the advanced recycling and purification of end-of-life PMMA and other challenging structures, turning them into high-quality acrylic resins, sheets, and compounds with recycled content.
Depolymerization, a chemical recycling technology, complements traditional mechanical recycling by breaking down polymers into monomers. This process extends the recycling capabilities for a broader range of PMMA materials, enhancing recycling rates and reducing reliance on virgin materials. Francesca Reverberi, Trinseo's Chief Sustainability Officer, emphasizes the plant's role in establishing PMMA as a circular material, combined with in-house sourcing and treatment through their Heathland recycling operation.
The facility's continuous recovery model aims to produce recycled PMMA matching virgin quality, supporting sustainability in the plastics supply chain. This approach aligns with lowering carbon emissions, water usage, and conserving natural resources, according to the MMA two project's environmental benefits calculator.
The technology also promises new life for various products, from car lamps to signage, under Trinseo's “R-Life” portfolio, which includes both mechanically and chemically recycled PMMA grades. This portfolio caters to applications across mobility, construction, and consumer goods sectors, responding to the increasing demand for sustainably developed products.
According to the article by Procurement Resource, Trinseo's new PMMA depolymerization plant in Rho, Italy, set for Q1 2024, advances sustainable plastics by recycling PMMA into high-quality materials, supporting a circular economy and reducing environmental impact.
