Regenyx, a Significant Polystyrene Recycling Plant Marked the end of its Operation

Polystyrene Recycling Plant

The closure of Regenyx, the pioneering commercial-scale closed-loop chemical recycling facility for polystyrene (PS) in Tigard, Oregon, marks a significant moment in the recycling industry. Established in 2019 through a joint venture between Agilyx and AmSty, Regenyx aimed to revolutionize the recycling of PS waste by converting it back into raw materials, thus promoting a circular economy model. The facility was designed to process up to 10 tons of PS waste per day, equivalent to approximately 3,650 tons per year.

The closure of Regenyx does not signify the end of the companies' commitment to advancing PS recycling technologies. Agilyx's interim CEO, Russ Main, expressed pride in the team's accomplishments, highlighting the facility's role as a first-of-its-kind circular recycling model for polystyrene in the U.S.

The project not only diverted over 6 million pounds of post-use polystyrene waste from landfills but also paved the way for additional commercial projects. One such project is the Toyo Styrene plant in Japan, which is set to showcase the latest generation of Agilyx's pyrolysis technology for recycled styrene monomer production.

The Regenyx facility was more than a recycling plant; it served as a demonstration site for Agilyx’s technology, earning ISCC-Plus certification in 2020 for its sustainable practices. AmSty, on its part, reprocessed the feedstock into new polystyrene resin and products, showcasing the practical applications of recycled materials.

Over its operational years, Regenyx achieved notable milestones, including processing a total of 4,400 tons of PS waste between 2019 and 2021. The venture also undertook operational advancements in 2021 to enhance efficiency and maximize output. Despite these efforts, the facility's journey came to an end in 2024 when the joint venture partners decided to close the facility by April 30, citing the successful achievement of the objectives outlined in their five-year formation agreement.
