The increasing emphasis on sustainability, particularly in Europe, has amplified the demand for PUDs as coatings for recyclable single-material food packaging. Given the forecasted growth in single-material packaging, Mitsui Chemicals aims to proactively enhance its distribution network.

What is Polyurethane Dispersions PUD?

PUDs stand for "Polyurethane Dispersions." They are water-based dispersions of polyurethane polymers. Due to their water-based nature, PUDs are often considered more environmentally friendly than solvent-based systems.

Polyurethane Dispersions have a variety of applications due to their versatility. They offer excellent performance properties like resistance to abrasion, flexibility, and chemical resistance. As a result, PUDs are used in various sectors, including coatings for leather and textiles, automotive finishes, wood coatings, and adhesives, among others.

PUDs are highlighted for their use as barrier coating materials, especially in recyclable mono-material food packaging, due to their environmentally friendly attributes.

According to Procurement Resource, owing to rising global demand for sustainable solutions, Mitsui Chemicals is boosting its PUD production at the Shimizu Factory. Targeting a doubled capacity by June 2025, this move aligns with Europe's growing preference for eco-friendly packaging. Mitsui Chemicals' initiative exemplifies its commitment to both environmental sustainability and evolving market needs.
