The largest single-site refinery in India now belongs to MRPL

Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited (MRPL), a refinery situated in the coastal region of Karnataka as well as a subsidiary of ONGC, has secured the position of largest PSU refinery of India for the year 2022-23, according to the report of the company released on Wednesday. The company managed to achieve this position by processing crude oil of approximately 17.14 million metric tonnes.

As per the reports, the MRPL refinery in India has achieved an all-time high throughput for a single-location PSU refinery in the history of the country's petroleum refining. Moreover, from the total crude oil refined by the PSU petroleum refineries in India, MRPL processes 10 percent of them. The refiner was originally set up in 1988 as a joint venture with a capacity of 3.69 million metric tonnes per annum (MMTPA). Since then, it has undergone two additional expansions to increase its capacity to 15 MMTPA.

MRPL has the capability to process over 250 distinct crudes imported from all around the world, including major ones from the Middle East, Europe, Africa, Russia, South America, South Asia, and the United States. Moreover, they also have the ability to produce a full range of petroleum products like LPG, naphtha, high-speed diesel, aviation turbine fuel, xylene, kerosene, etc. Besides this, to enhance its petrochemical profile, the company has also taken significant steps.

The Novolen gas-phase polypropylene plant has the ability to produce a full range of homopolymer grades. In addition, the aromatic complex located in the Mangalore Special Economic Zone (MSEZ) can manufacture 0.905 MMTPA of paraxylene and 0.273 MMTPA of benzene. This complex is totally incorporated with the MRPL. Furthermore, the MRPL is also determined to expand its retail business and is taking the necessary steps to achieve this goal. This plan also involves the expansion of its RO brand in over 1000 locations in South India in the near future.

According to Procurement Resource, MRPL, one of the leading refineries in India, has achieved second position among the largest PSU refineries. In the financial year 2022-23, the company processed 17.14 million metric tonnes of crude oil. Additionally, the company has also achieved its all-time high throughput in history.
