BP Partners with Pertamina to Enforce CCUS Initiative at the Tangguh Gas Site

Tangguh Gas Site

BP, a global energy leader, has partnered with Pertamina, Indonesia's state-owned enterprise, to embark on a carbon capture, utilisation, and storage (CCUS) initiative at the Tangguh gas site in Indonesia. An MoU, facilitating this collaboration, was formalized between BP Berau Ltd, which operates Tangguh, and PT Kilang Pertamina Internasional. The mutual agreement encompasses a joint study aimed at gauging the potential of gas supply and CO2 injection at Tangguh, especially concerning the prospective development of blue ammonia within the Teluk Bintuni Regency.

The focal point of Pertamina's research is to buttress the expansion of the petrochemical sector in West Papua, Indonesia. This is the same region where the Tangguh liquefied natural gas (LNG) enterprise is situated. BP has confirmed that the Indonesian government has already sanctioned the development blueprint for the Tangguh project.

Kathy Wu, the Asia Pacific Regional President for gas and low carbon energy at bp, highlighted the MoU as an emblem of their strategic alliance with Pertamina. Tangguh, which is recognized as a potential carbon capture and storage (CCS) hub, procures natural gas from three separate offshore production sharing contracts. This could position it to cater to both local and global markets in terms of carbon reduction efforts.

Another significant aspect is the potential use of Tangguh CCUS for blue ammonia production, which is gaining traction as an anticipated clean energy substitute. The production of blue ammonia involves several stages, commencing with the generation of syngas—a blend of hydrogen and nitrogen. The CO2 emissions produced during this phase are captured using advanced technology to ensure they don't contribute to atmospheric pollution. Subsequent stages include synthesizing ammonia by combining hydrogen and nitrogen under high pressure, which is then purified for diverse applications.

Reflecting on this partnership, Taufik Adityawarman, the President Director of Kilang Pertamina Internasional, emphasized Pertamina's commitment to tackling the 'Energy Trilemma'. The organization aspires to provide energy solutions that are not only abundant and economical but also sustainable. Their focus on alternative clean energy, especially blue ammonia, aligns with this vision, aiming to spur environmentally friendly electricity production.
