Finally, in the extraction phase, sulfuric acid is introduced to the pure sodium tungstate solution to adjust the pH to between 2 and 3, which facilitates the aggregation of sodium tungstate into sodium metatungstate. This mixture undergoes extraction using gas and organic phases, resulting in tungsten forming an extract complex that enters the organic phase. The extract complex is washed with water and ammonia solution is added to produce ammonium tungstate as the final product.
Properties of Ammonium Tungstate
Ammonium Tungstate is a white crystalline powder having the molecular formula (NH4)10H2(W2O7)6 or (NH4)10(H2W12O42) and a molecular weight of 2956.30 g/mol. It has a density of 2.3 g/cm³. It has a melting point greater than 300 °C, which indicates its stability at high temperatures. It is soluble in warm water but only somewhat soluble in cold water. It is insoluble in organic solvents like methanol and n-octanol. It is stable under normal conditions but can react with strong oxidizing agents and alkalis to release ammonia gas. It is non-corrosive in the presence of glass but should be handled with care due to its irritant properties upon contact with skin or mucous membranes. Upon heating to a temperature of 600 °C, ammonium tungstate decomposes to form tungsten(VI) oxide (WO3), ammonia (NH3), and water (H2O).
