  • Production from crude oil via solvent refining: The production process of base oil occurs from crude oil via solvent refining. The first process is solvent extraction, in which solvents such as furfural or phenol extract most impurities, such as aromatic compounds, from the oil. The oil is then sent for de-waxing, where paraffins are removed from the oil using methyl ethyl ketone and toluene. The final step, hydro finishing, uses hydrogen and a catalyst to remove sulfur and nitrogen to produce purified Base Oil.
  • Production via hydrocracking: The production process of Base Oil starts with the hydrocracking method. In this process, high-temperature (420°C) and high-pressure (200 bar) break down larger, complex hydrocarbon molecules into smaller, uniform compounds. The next step is hydroisomerization, which converts normal paraffin waxes into isoparaffin structures. The final step (hydrotreating) removes unwanted components like sulfur and nitrogen and fully saturates chemical bonds using hydrogen to produce Base Oil.

Base oil includes naphthenics and Group I, II, and III paraffinic base oils. All these oils have specific properties, making them ideal for certain applications. It is the main component in any lubricant; however, the oil's quality and viscosity are different based on the application and the atmosphere. A few of the important properties of base oil include viscosity limitation, oxidation, thermal stability, volatility, viscosity index, hydraulic stability, pour point, and aniline point (solvency measure with other materials and additives). Base oils have four main physical properties, such as pour point, viscosity, viscosity index (VI), and purity. Synthetic base oils are not direct crude oil processing products and have better functional properties that offer improved protection of machine and equipment part surfaces.
