Bio-adipic Acid is a C6 aliphatic dicarboxylic acid that appears to be a white crystalline powder. Bio-adipic acid, with a molecular formula of C6H10O4 and a slightly acidic pH, can undergo esterification and amidation reactions similar to adipic acid, making it suitable for the production of nylon and other polymers, and is soluble in water and polar organic solvents like ethanol and acetone.

The main biochemical-based production methods for the production can be direct fermentation to adipic acid or fermentation to muconic or glucaric acid, after which chemical hydrogenation (indirect fermentation) is carried out. It is mainly used for applications like the production of nylon 6,6, polyurethane, manufacturing plasticizers and lubricants, as well as gelling and acidulant agent (food grade).
