Calcium Hydride Production Cost Report

Calcium Hydride is a grayish-colored lump or a solid crystalline chemical. It is primarily composed of one calcium and two hydrogen atoms. It has an orthorhombic crystalline structure with a grey color. The chemical actively reacts with water and certain chemical solvents, such as lower alcohols and carboxylic acids, to produce hydrogen. It is a highly ionic compound and can also react with ethanol. Calcium Hydride is considered a saline hydride, as it exhibits a salt-like structure. It forms two ionic bonds between calcium and hydrogen ions.

Its molecular mass is 42.094 g/mol. Its melting point is measured at around 816 °C, and its density is approximately 1.9 g/cm3. The compound can react vigorously upon exposure to water and alcohol. It can also cause explosions when reacting with specific compounds, including potassium perchlorate, bromate, chloride, and hypochlorite. It becomes incandescent when mixed with silver fluoride. Due to its reactive nature, it is generally handled with caution and is considered highly corrosive.

Calcium Hydride has various industrial applications, predominantly linked with the chemical and metallurgical industries. This chemical is chiefly used as a desiccant and as a mild drying agent in commercial contexts. It can be employed to dry basic solvents, including amines and pyridines. It's also utilized to produce pure hydrogen, which is subsequently used in fuel cells.

This compound is applied to assess moisture contents in diesel. It serves as a reducing agent in numerous chemical reactions, facilitating chemical synthesis. Additionally, Calcium Hydride (not calcium carbide) is used in powder metallurgy to reduce metal oxides like uranium, zirconium, vanadium, niobium, and tantalum at temperatures ranging from 600 °C to 1000 °C.
