The intermediate undergoes reduction by using hydrogen in the presence of a platinum oxide catalyst to form another intermediate. The intermediate is subjected to acylation with 2-(2-thienyl)acetylchloride to give the third intermediate. The ester-protecting group of the intermediate undergoes hydrolysis by using trifluoroacetic acid and then reacts with sodium bicarbonate and is converted to the potassium salt. The compound undergoes hydrolysis to form the final intermediate. Finally, the intermediate is treated with chlorosulfonyl isocyanate, followed by hydrolysis with water to produce Cefoxitin.

Cefoxitin, commercially known as Mefoxin, appears as a white to off-white crystalline powder having the molecular formula C16H17N3O7S2 and a molecular weight of 427.5 g/mol. It has a melting point in the range of 165-167 °C. It has a water solubility of around 0.195 mg/mL. The value of its dissociation constant, pKa, is 3.39. It dissolves easily in acetone. It is soluble in aqueous sodium bicarbonate. However, it is insoluble in ether and chloroform. It is a broad-spectrum antibiotic used for the treatment of various bacterial infections.
