Cobalt Chloride is a reddish-pink-colored chemical compound that is mainly composed of one cobalt and two chlorine atoms. It is often termed as cobalt(II) chloride and is commercially available in the hexahydrate form. The chemical formula of Cobalt Chloride hexahydrate is given by CoCl2·6H2O. Cobalt Chloride can turn from blue to pink in the presence of moisture. It is hygroscopic in nature, and its density may vary with the existing form.

It is available in anhydrous and hydrated forms that exhibit different chemical and physical properties. The anhydrous salt of cobalt has a melting point of around 735 °C and can vaporize at temperatures above 1000 °C. The hexahydrate does not undergo decomposition at around 87 °C but loses water, which can lead to decomposition at higher temperatures. It is a water-soluble chemical that can also be dissolved in other chemical solvents, including ethanol, ether, and acetone. The solubility of the hydrates is greater than that of anhydrous Cobalt Chloride.

It can be prepared by various methods, most prominently by the chemical reaction of cobalt metal, oxide, or hydroxides with hydrochloric acid. The reaction results in the production of Cobalt Chloride and water. The chemical can also be synthesized by the dehydration of Cobalt Chloride hexahydrate using thionyl chloride. It can undergo various chemical reactions that yield different cobalt salts that can be used in several other commercial applications. When its solution is heated with sodium carbonate, cobalt(II) carbonate is produced. The compound can react with alkali hydroxide to produce cobalt(II) hydroxide.

Cobalt Chloride is primarily associated with the chemical and metal industries. It is used as a precursor for the synthesis of various cobalt salts. The chemical serves as a humidity and water indicator in making a hygrometer and can also be used as a temperature indicator in some grinding processes. It is often used in electroplating metal surfaces.

Furthermore, it is involved in making pigments for glass and porcelain. Cobalt Chloride is utilized in preparing catalysts and as a feed additive. It is used in the manufacturing of certain fertilizers. The compound's use as a foam stabilizer in beer and as an absorbent for military poison gas and ammonia is limited due to its toxicity. It is also involved in the synthesis of vitamin B12, although this is generally done using less toxic cobalt sources due to the toxicity of Cobalt Chloride.
