Eugenol is an oil used as a food additive and for preparation of teas containing the flavor of cloves. It can often be identified in spices, sauces as well as in some beverages. It is used in herbal oils to treat toothaches and has long been associated with dental care, particularly when mixed with zinc oxide to create dental cements or temporary fillings. Due to its antimicrobial and analgesic properties, it also helps in gastrointestinal and respiratory issues. It is used as a topical antiseptic in dental sectors. It is also used to protect nerve cells from damage, which could be useful in neurodegenerative conditions. It also has anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti-pyretic, analgesic, and anti-fungal features.
The market for Eugenol is driven by its application as an analgesic, antiseptic, antimicrobial, antioxidant, antipyretic, and anti-inflammatory agent, which elevates its demand in the pharmaceutical and medical industries. The utilization of its fragrance and preservative properties in cosmetics and personal care sectors fuels its demand even more. It’s use as a flavour intensifier and its natural role as a preservative fuel its demand in the food and beverages industry. Its use as an herbal oil for the treatment of toothache makes its products popular in the dental market.
Overall, industrial Eugenol procurement is influenced by its application in various industries such as pharmaceutical and medical, cosmetics and personal care, food and beverage, and dental industries, the availability of its raw materials (aromatic plants, solvents, and clove sample), the growing preference for eco-friendly and natural products, technological advancements, and regulatory approvals.
Raw Material for Eugenol Production
According to the Eugenol manufacturing plant project report, the key raw materials used in the production of Eugenol include aromatic plants; solvents; clove sample.
Manufacturing Process of Eugenol
The extensive Eugenol production cost report consists of the following major industrial manufacturing processes:
- Production via steam distillation: The manufacturing process of Eugenol involves the steam distillation method. The essential oil is extracted from various aromatic plants, mainly clove buds and cinnamon bark. The essential oil is mixed with a 3 percent solution of potassium or sodium hydroxide to form a phenolic alkali salt (eugenol potassium or sodium salt). This reaction helps in the isolation of Eugenol from the oil, followed by steam distillation and purification via HPLC, NMR, and TLC to produce the crude Eugenol.
- Production via solvent extraction: The production process involves the extraction of Eugenol from various solvents such as petroleum ether, N-hexane, ethanol, and methanol. In this process, the clove buds are grinded and wrapped in filter paper which is placed in a Soxhlet apparatus. In the Soxhlet system, a solvent is used at 50 °C to extract Eugenol.
- Production via hydro-distillation: The production process involves the hydro-distillation of clove sample in a volumetric flask for 4-6 hours. The distillate obtained is saturated with sodium chloride (NaCl). In the next step, ether (typically diethyl ether) is added to the saturated solution. The ether is treated with anhydrous sodium sulfate, followed by filtration to produce Eugenol.
Eugenol, or clove oil, is a phenolic molecule that is naturally available. It forms a significant constituent of clove bud oil (80–90%) and clove leaf oil (82–88%). The oil looks clear to pale yellow and has an aromatic presence (a pleasant, spicy aroma). It has a molecular weight of 164.21 g/mol and a density of 1.06 g/cm³. It is soluble to some extent in water, volatile oil, ether, and chloroform. Its respective boiling and melting points are 254 °C and -7.5 °C.
