Fatty Acid - C18 Production Cost Report

Fatty Acid - C18 or Stearic acid (C18H36O2) is a long-chain fatty acid. It is naturally present in several sources, like shea butter and coconut oil. It occurs in animal and plant fats (usually palm or coconut oil). It is a primary element of cocoa and shea butter. It is an emulsifier, emollient, and lubricant which softens the skin and helps keep products from separating. It has a bifunctional nature, a polar head unit which might be linked to metallic activities.

The acid appears to be white, waxy crystalline solid with a mild pungent odour. It floats on water. It has the role of a plant metabolite, a Daphnia magna metabolite, an algal metabolite, and a human metabolite. It has a molecular weight of 284.484 g/mol and has a density of 0.9408 g/cm3. Its respective melting and boiling points of 69.3 °C and 361 °C.

Fatty Acid - C18 is mainly used in the manufacturing of cosmetics, candles, lubricants, shaving soaps, and pharmaceuticals. Furthermore, it is also used for treating symptoms of eczema, reducing inflammation, and retaining skin moisture. It is also employed as an additive in shampoos and detergents. It is also used in the food packaging industry, such as it is used alongside castor oil to prepare softeners in textile sizing. It also finds applications in several niche applications like candle manufacturing, candy hardener, and dietary supplements.

In fireworks, the acid is used for coating metal powders like aluminium and iron, preventing oxidation and increasing the storage duration. Also, it has been used as a common lubricant for injection moulding and pressing ceramic powders over the years. Along with that, it is also used as a mould release for foam latex which is baked to form stone moulds.
