Folic Acid or Folacid is a member of the family vitamin B. It is also known as vitamin B9 and has several industrial applications, primarily in the pharmaceutical and food sectors. It is widely used as a dietary supplement to prevent and treat folate deficiency, which can lead to conditions such as megaloblastic anemia. It is also indicated as a supplement for pregnant women to help prevent neural tube defects in developing fetuses. It also finds its application in combination therapies to reduce the side effects of medications like methotrexate, which is used for cancer and autoimmune diseases. It is also utilized as a nutrient additive in the production of various fortified foods such as cereals, bread, pasta, and rice to enhance its nutritional value and combat folate deficiency. It is often used as an ingredient in the manufacturing of multivitamin supplements because of its vital role in DNA synthesis, red blood cell formation, and promoting overall cellular function.
The market for Folic Acid is primarily driven by its demand as a mineral supplement for the treatment and prevention of low levels of folate in blood and high levels of homocysteine. Its utilization as a dietary supplement in the treatment of folic acid deficiency, megaloblastic anemia and supporting healthy pregnancy also contributes to its demand in the healthcare and nutrition industries. Its involvement as an ingredient in the production of fortified foods such as cereals and pasta to improve nutritional value further enhances its demand in the food industry. Folic acid is subject to health regulations, especially concerning its use in food fortification. Therefore, compliance with food safety regulations and high-quality standards associated with its role in health and nutrition greatly impact industrial Folic Acid procurement.
The synthesis of folic acid requires specific precursor chemicals and materials like para nitro benzoic acid (PNBA) and toluene. Thus, changes in the availability and price of these materials directly impact the production costs and procurement strategies for folic acid. Global health initiatives and efforts to combat nutritional deficiencies and increasing awareness of the health benefits of folic acid, particularly in prenatal health further drive demand for supplements and fortified foods.
Raw Material for Folic Acid Production
According to the Folic Acid manufacturing plant project report, the major raw materials for Folic Acid production include Paranitro Benzoic Acid (PNBA)-Toluene.
Manufacturing Process of Folic Acid
The extensive Folic Acid production cost report consists of the following industrial manufacturing process:
- Production from Paranitro Benzoic Acid (PNBA): This method of production involves the synthesis of Folic Acid by using multiple stages. Stage 1 involves the reaction of paranitro benzoic acid (PNBA) with Thionyl chloride (SOCL2) in toluene as medium and in the presence of small amounts of Dimethyl formamide (DMF), followed by condensed with Monosodium glutamate (MSG) to form Para nitro benzyol-L-glutamic acid (PNBGA). Further, the obtained solution of para nitro benzyol-L-glutamic acid (PNBGA) is reduced to form para aminobenzoyl-Lglutamic acid (PABGA) by using iron powder. Stage 2 involves the chlorination reaction of acetone under controlled conditions to give 1,1,3-Trichloro acetone (TCA). Stage 3 is the final step of the synthesis, which involves the condensation of the two products of all the two stages (Para aminobenzoyl-Lglutamic acid (PABGA) and 1,1,3-Trichloro acetone (TCA)) with 2,4,5 – Triamino-6-hydroxy pyrimidine sulphate (TAPS) to obtain Folic acid. Then, the obtained folic acid is treated with hydrochloric acid, followed by stirring to give purified Folic acid as the final product.
Folic Acid is a form of water-soluble vitamin B9. It belongs to the family of folic acids and a N-acyl-amino acid. The compound is also found in green vegetables, beans, avocados, and some fruits. The molecular formula of the compound is C19H19N7O6. Its molar mass is 441.4 g/mol. It appears as yellowish-orange crystals that often get dark and charred at a temperature of around 250 °C. The compound is almost insoluble in water and is heat-sensitive, as it decomposes rapidly in the presence of light. The melting point of the compound is 250 °C, and its pka value is 3.5 and 4.3. The density of the compound is around 1.6 g/cm³. Additionally, aqueous solutions of folic acid have a pH of 4.0-4.8.
