After purification, the graphite goes through shaping and baking, followed by graphitization at 2700°C to 3000°C in an inert atmosphere. Graphite is a greyish-black naturally occurring allotrope of carbon that has a metallic luster. It is naturally present and is mixed with mica, quartz, and silica. In Graphite, each carbon atom is bonded to three neighboring carbon atoms in a flat, hexagonal pattern, creating layers. There is weak bonding between these layers because of weak forces, and they can easily slide over one another. This property makes Graphite soft and lubricating. At standard temperature and pressure, it is an inert material, and it does not react with water. At a temperature of 700°C in the presence of air, it combusts, producing carbon dioxide as a result. It sublimates at around 3650°C under normal pressure conditions. It is an excellent thermal and electric conductor and has a lower density ranging from 2.20 to 2.30 g/cm³.
