It makes a homopolymer and copolymer. HPMA is a clear, colorless liquid to white crystalline solid in appearance that has a light unpleasant odor. It may float or sink in water. It readily copolymerizes with a wide range of monomers, and the added hydroxyl groups enhance adhesion to surfaces, include cross-linking sites, impart corrosion, fogging, and abrasion resistance, and contribute to low odor, color, and volatility, as well. It is non-volatile, non-toxic, and non-yellowing. It is soluble in water, alcohol, ether, and other organic solvents. It has a molecular weight of 144.17 g/mol and a density of 1.029 g/cm3 at 20°C. It has a boiling, freezing, flash, and melting point of 209°C(5mmHg), -58°C, 104°C, and -58°C, respectively. Other properties of the product include its chemical resistance, hydraulic stability, flexibility, shock resistance, and weather resistance.
