It is a chemical irritant that is an ester derived from ethylene glycol and methacrylic acid. The compound is incompatible with strong oxidizing agents and a few chemicals, such as peroxides and steel. The reaction results in esterification and resulted in the production of Hydroxyethyl Methacrylate (HEMA). It can undergo polymerization to form methacrylate resins. It is an air-sensitive compound that generally remains unstable. However, it is stabilized by adding hydroquinone or pyrogallol in the presence of a metallic element, i.e., copper.

It is a monomer that is widely associated with the plastic, rubber, and polymers industries. The compound is polymerized to produce polymers of Hydroxyethyl Methacrylate that are further utilized to manufacture various plastic or polymer products. It is used to produce acrylic polymers that are further processed to manufacture products, including adhesives and paints. Moreover, it is utilized in preparing printing inks and coating materials for different industries such as automotive, metal appliances, etc.
