L-lactides and D-lactides are optically active chiral enantiomers, whereas meso-lactide is not optically active. The molecular formula for lactide is C6H8O4, and its molar mass is 144.126 g/mol. The IUPAC name of lactide is 3,6-Dimethyl-1,4-dioxan-2,5-dione. It is also known as Dilactid. It appears as colorless or white solids and is completely soluble in organic solvents, such as chloroform. Moreover, its density is 1.2 g/cm3.
