The compound is known for its unique chemical properties and diverse applications. It can also be synthesized by the thermal decomposition of decomposable chemicals such as lithium sulfite, which also emits lithium oxide and oxygen as the byproducts. It can undergo an electrolytic dissociation reaction and release lithium ions along with thiosulfate ions. Its reaction with strong acidic chemicals yields corresponding salts of strong acids along with thiosulfuric acid.

It can also react with strong oxidizers such as oxygen, chlorine, and nitric acid, resulting in the formation of lithium sulfate, lithium chloride, and lithium sulfate, along with nitrous acid, respectively. It undergoes precipitation reactions when reacted with compounds such as hydrogen fluoride, sodium fluoride, etc., resulting in lithium fluoride as the end product. It decomposes to generate lithium oxide, sulfite, and sulfur as the end products.

It is an inorganic chemical with unique chemical properties. Hence, it finds its applications in selective yet prominent sectors across the globe. The compound is directly or indirectly utilized in fields including chemical, photography, pharmaceutical, medical, etc. It can be used as a fixing agent in photographic emulsion and helps in stabilizing the image.
