Then, the obtained compound is heated with diethyloxalate at 100°–180°C to form 1,2-diketo-3(N)-methyl-2,3,4,4a-tetrahydro-1H-pyrazino-[1,2-f]-morphanthridine, followed by reduction with diborane, which results in the formation of Mianserin as the final product.
Mianserin is widely recognized as a tetracyclic compound having antidepressant properties. The molecular formula of the compound is C18H20N2, and its molar mass is 264.4 g/mol. Moreover, its exact mode of therapeutic action is unknown, although the drug seems to block some types of serotonin receptors, histamine H1, and alpha-adrenergic receptors. It could result in dizziness and sleepiness. Other common side effects of this drug include weight gain, dry mouth, headaches, etc.
