O-xylene is miscible with several solvents, including ethanol, ethyl ether, acetone, and benzene, but it does not dissolve in water.
However, it's important to use caution when handling o-xylene because it can inhibit cholinesterase, a crucial enzyme, leading to severe neurotoxic effects like excessive salivation, eye-watering, muscle spasms, and even death. Certain nerve gases and insecticides can cause complete enzyme inhibition by binding to the active site of acetylcholinesterase, acting similarly to o-xylene.
O-xylene offers several advantages as a raw material for producing phthalic anhydride. Besides phthalic anhydride, O-xylene is used to produce germicide fenramine, tetra chlorophenyl peptide, and herbicide bensulfuron-methyl and serves as an intermediate for manufacturing o-methyl benzoic acid. As a versatile chemical raw material and solvent, it finds applications in producing dyes, pesticides, and drugs including vitamins and can be used as an additive for aviation gasoline. Furthermore, it functions as a chromatographic standard and is employed in various organic synthesis processes, including the production of anhydrides.
