Further, the obtained dinitrile is hydrolyzed to a diacid.

It is converted into 4-hydroxyalkyl imidazole by reacting with methylmagnesium bromide, followed by alkylation with a biphenyl-tetrazolyl bromide derivative to add a biphenyl-tetrazole group to the product. Then, the obtained ester is further hydrolyzed with lithium hydroxide, followed by alkylation with medoxomil chloride to form trityl-protected Olmesartan. Then, the protective group from the product is removed with the help of 25% aqueous acetic acid to obtain the desired Olmesartan.

Olmesartan is an antihypertensive agent and is a synthetic biphenylyltetrazole. The molecular formula of the compound is C24H26N6O3, and its molar mass is 446.5 g/mol.  The IUPAC name of the compound is 5-(2-hydroxypropan-2-yl)-2-propyl-3-[[4-[2-(2H-tetrazol-5-yl)phenyl]phenyl]methyl]imidazole-4-carboxylic acid.

It appears as a light yellowish crystalline powder that is not readily soluble in water but dissolves to 20mM in DMSO. The melting point and the boiling point of the compound are 175-180°C and 800ºC, respectively. It is generally sold under the name Benicar. Its function is to inhibit substances that cause blood vessels to tighten, and thus, it helps relax the blood vessels and brings down the blood pressure.
