It is miscible in ethanol, diethyl ether, and others. Similarly, it is slightly soluble in chloroform, as well.

Its density is 0.993 g/mL at a standard temperature of 25 °C. It is a highly flammable chemical liquid with a corrosive nature. Its autoignition temperature is 465 °C. It decomposes when heated at a high temperature and releases acrid smoke in the air. It contains short-chain saturated fatty acid consisting of ethane attached to a carboxy group.
