Propylene is an unsaturated organic compound that is extensively used for manufacturing products like resins, fibers, and elastomers. In addition, a significant amount of this compound is used in the production of polypropylene, which is further used to make apparel, squeeze bottles, outdoor furniture, etc.
In the chemical industry, it is used to produce a wide number of chemical products like the preparation of alkylates for gasoline, the production of polypropylene, acrylonitrile, etc. Also, other applications of this product include its uses as an acetylene alternative in oxy-fuel welding, heating, and cutting of metal, in the organic synthesis of materials such as acetone, for making polypropylene plastic following its polymerization, and as a refrigerant or in calibration mixtures.
The market for propylene is majorly driven by its demand for its primary usage as a chemical intermediary to produce polypropylene, which serves as a versatile building block for the production of a variety of important polymers and intermediates, which contributes to various industries like the food industry in manufacturing jars, containers, and automotive industry to produce instrument panels, bumpers, etc., and thus, increases its demand for the chemical manufacturing industries.
It also serves as an alternative to acetylene in oxy-fuel welding and cutting, heating metal for bending, which boosts its demand in the petrochemical industries. Moreover, it is also used to manufacture certain compounds, which further enhances its demand in various industries like packaging, consumer goods, medical, cast films, and thermoplastics such as in manufacturing tote bags, etc. Additionally, several factors influence industrial propylene procurement, such as the cost and availability of its feedstock, such as ethylene, natural gas, etc., the market prices of propylene, environmental regulations, quality standards, and its distribution, which includes trading and transportation, logistics, etc.
Raw Material for Propylene Production
According to the Propylene manufacturing plant project report, the major raw materials for Propylene production include Natural Gas; Ethylene - 2-Butene.
Manufacturing Process of Propylene
The extensive Propylene production cost report consists of the following industrial manufacturing processes:
- Production Through Natural Gas: Propylene is made using natural gas in this technique. There are two steps to this process- First, methanol is transformed into a mixture of dimethyl ether, methanol, and water. Propylene and a few other byproducts are produced in the second step from the dimethyl ether effluents.
- Production Through Fluidized Bed Catalytic Reactor: This method produces propylene and ethylene by using a fluidized bed catalytic reactor system with a catalyst and low-quality feedstock.
- Production from Ethylene and 2-Butenes: In a fixed bed metathesis reactor, ethylene and 2-butene are added and allowed to react with a special catalyst. Propylene is produced in this reaction along with the isomers of butene to 2-butene.
Propylene (C3H6) or propene is a clear gas that is produced using gasoline refining or by splitting, cracking, and reforming hydrocarbon mixtures. It has a natural pungent (strong) smell. It is a great substitute for heating and cutting because of its high combustion. It is extensively used as a fuel but also finds application in the chemical and plastics industries.
Propylene is a non-toxic and colourless gas that has a slight smell like that of petroleum. Its molecular weight is 42.08 U, and its density of 223.4 kg/m3. Its melting and boiling points are 87.9 K and 225.46 K respectively. The gas is highly flammable and can lead to explosions. Its vapours are heavier compared to air.
