Its reaction with the gold element leads to the formation of a red-yellow solution of gold (III) selenate. It is soluble in water.

One of its mainstream applications includes acid variety and its utilization as an oxidizing agent in some chemical synthesis process that yields selenium-based chemicals on a large scale. The chemical is also used in refining metals to some extent. It is used as a rust removal compound in certain market applications.
