However, it decomposes by heating it at higher temperatures while releasing toxic fumes of selenium. It reacts with water to form a corrosive solution and possesses the ability to corrode most metal varieties. It dissolves in water, forming selenic acid. Its reaction with carbon at an elevated temperature gives out selenium following a reduction reaction. It reacts with ammonia to give selenium, nitrogen, and water. It is a toxic chemical that can harm ingestion.

It is mainly utilized in the chemical industry to prepare or synthesize selenium-based compounds. It serves as a chemical reagent for alkaloids and is also known as an oxidizing agent in different organic synthesis processes. It is mostly used as an oxidizing agent in the allylic oxidation process of alkenes, which leads to the formation of allylic alcohols. Moreover, it can be used as a colorless toner in photographic development processes.
