It decomposes by heating the liquid at high temperatures while emitting strong fumes of hydrogen chloride. It is a clear, corrosive chemical liquid that can corrode metals in the presence of water. The compound can be polymerized easily under the required conditions.

It belongs to the family of chlorosilanes, which has several applications associated with different market sectors. The chemical is majorly used in synthesizing silicon-based compounds. It is also considered an analytical liquid that is utilized in analytical chemistry.

It is often used as a raw material or as an intermediate in the preparation of metallurgical-grade silicon, silica, or other silicon-based compounds. It plays a vital role in the production of high-quality fumed silica. It is utilized as a precursor in the preparation of orthosilicate acid esters such as tetraethoxysilane and tetraethoxysilane. Its derivatives are further used as raw materials in manufacturing aerogels, which are further used in automotive, pharmaceutical, and construction operations.
