As the last step, the obtained intermediate undergoes hydrogenation in the presence of Degussa catalyst, concomitant debenzylation, and chloride removal, followed by the addition of cyanoacetate group to obtain tofacitinib as the final product.

Tofacitinib belongs to the class of medications called Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitors. It is majorly marketed under the trade name XELJANZ.
