In 2024, Corn Gluten Feed (CGF) prices showed a generally downward trend across major global markets. In Asia, particularly in China, prices fell steadily during the first half of the year. High domestic stock levels and weaker import demand put pressure on the market, even though local production remained stable. Oversupply from major producing countries such as the U.S., Brazil, and Argentina added to the downward trend. In India, corn production remained largely unchanged, contributing little to market support.

European CGF markets experienced similar pressure. Imported corn faced high freight costs, while trade activity declined. Domestic production was sufficient to meet local demand, but downstream industries like animal feed and ethanol remained cautious, limiting price growth. In North America, U.S. Corn Gluten Feed prices declined as record corn harvests and large inventories weighed on the market. Farmers held significant stocks in anticipation of higher prices later, which limited immediate market movement. Export demand offered some support, but abundant supply and limited domestic consumption kept prices in check.

About Corn Gluten Feed

It is the by-product of the wet milling of corn/maize grain during starch production. Corn Gluten Feed is known to be a relatively high fibre, medium-energy, medium-protein product which is essentially fed to ruminants. Its fibres are highly digestible by ruminants.

It has around 22% crude protein and is a mixture of steep liquor, bran, and maize germ oil from the mill processing. Moreover, the corn gluten feed can be substituted for grains, like for maize grain, to reduce the starch load in the rumens. Corn gluten meal, which contains about 65% crude protein is completely different from Corn Gluten Feed.

Corn Gluten Feed Production Processes

  • Production of Corn Gluten Feed via Wet Milling Process

Corn or maize grain is steeped in water combined with sulphur dioxide. This makes maize kernel coarsely ground and thus, germs are separated from the endosperm, which further goes through screenings to extract and separate fibre (bran) from starch and proteins slurry. The resulting fibre is mixed with steep liquor and maize germ oil meal to finally produce Corn Gluten Feed.
