Asia
The Chinese phosphorous acid market displayed mixed dynamics during the fourth quarter, with pricing movements reflecting shifting cost support and supply-demand conditions. The opening period witnessed modest weakness as prices eased slightly, driven by lower raw material phosphorus yellow costs that reduced production economics support. Market sentiment remained cautious as downstream buyers maintained need-based purchasing strategies with limited speculative activity. Mid-quarter brought appreciation as raw material costs strengthened progressively, providing enhanced cost support. Market optimism increased as trading activity improved and downstream inquiries expanded from fertilizer producers and industrial phosphate manufacturers. The latter portion introduced consolidation as phosphorus yellow markets experienced renewed softening after mid-period strength, weakening cost support. Supply-demand conditions remained balanced, with downstream procurement continuing an as-needed basis without significant inventory building, leading to range-bound fluctuations through year-end.
Europe
European phosphorous acid markets displayed initial weakness before entering sustained appreciation during the latter portion of the quarter. The opening period witnessed a gradual decline as prices softened from their early-quarter levels. Supply conditions remained adequate as import availability from Asian origins supplemented domestic production capacity. Downstream demand from fertilizer and industrial phosphate applications maintained steady consumption patterns, with agricultural sector requirements following typical seasonal cycles. The remainder of the quarter brought progressive strengthening as prices advanced consistently, with the upward trajectory continuing through year-end as market fundamentals improved and cost structures provided increasing support. Raw material availability and energy costs influenced production economics, contributing to the upward pricing momentum. Industrial consumers adjusted procurement timing in response to market movements while maintaining regular offtake levels.
North America
North American markets followed patterns like Chinese trends, experiencing initial modest weakness followed by mid-quarter appreciation and late-quarter consolidation. Raw material cost dynamics influenced pricing movements, with phosphorus-based feedstock availability and pricing creating variable cost support. Demand from fertilizer manufacturing and food-grade phosphorous acid applications remained steady, with buyers maintaining regular procurement schedules throughout the period as supply-demand conditions stayed balanced. Industrial consumption from water treatment and specialty chemical sectors continued at typical levels.
Analyst Insight
According to Procurement Resource, phosphorous acid prices are expected to remain range-bound in the near term as supply availability stays adequate and downstream consumption follows seasonal patterns without significant inventory adjustments.

Asia
In Asia, especially China, phosphorus acid market mirrored the fluctuations of yellow phosphorus prices, its primary feedstock during the second quarter of 2025. Prices were stable in the early period of the quarter, and supply and demand were well-balanced. Since yellow phosphorus prices were quite stable, the phosphorus acid market remained relatively stagnant. But during the course of the quarter, yellow phosphorus prices began to exhibit some volatility, which caused changes in phosphorus acid prices. There was a temporary price fall during mid-quarter due to the declining costs of yellow phosphorus. However, this was followed by stabilisation in the prices in the last in the latter part of the quarter. By quarter-end, the market had consolidated at lower prices amid diminished demand and conservative market sentiment.
Europe
In Europe, the market for phosphorus acid displayed a definite drop during Q2 2025, mirroring the movement of yellow phosphorus prices. Prices were stable at the start of the quarter but declined as yellow phosphorus prices dropped. A decline in prices for yellow phosphorus prompted a corresponding fall in phosphorus acid prices, as cost support grew weaker. By the mid-quarter, the downtrend in yellow phosphorus prices picked up, and this had a direct impact on the phosphorus acid market, and additional price decreases were seen. The market continued to be weak at the tail end of the quarter, with prices consolidating at weaker levels. Weak demand from the Downstream industries, together with the continued decline in yellow phosphorus prices, led to the general weakness in the phosphorus acid market during Q2.
North America
In North America, the phosphorus acid market was more stable than in Europe and Asia in Q2 2025. Prices remained fairly stable in the early part of the quarter due to consistent supply situations and yellow phosphorus prices. When yellow phosphorus prices started depreciating, prices of phosphorus acid also fell slightly. In spite of this, the North American market did not see high volatility, with prices staying relatively stable throughout much of the quarter. The drop in prices for yellow phosphorus towards the end of Q2 led to a small price reduction in phosphorus acid, but the market was less impacted than elsewhere.
Phosphorous Acid, an intermediate in the production of other phosphorus compounds, is a diprotic acid. A diprotic acid simply means that it readily ionises two protons. It is a weak dibasic acid. Phosphorous Acid is widely utilised in the production of basic lead phosphite, a stabiliser in PVC along with related chlorinated polymers.
